One Amazing Man Makes Turning 25 the Best Birthday Ever!

When it comes to giving gifts, I love to make people wait in suspense. But a wonderful thing about Duane, is he can't wait to give me a gift, and I am dying to find out what it is. So when he asked when I want my birthday presents, we decided a day early. Logically, since we're at the office Monday, it makes sense to go out to eat then, rather than pack a lunch ;)

So at noon, we died and were reincarnated in India :) Naan, curry, chai, mango lassi... oh India, how I miss you!

That was deliciously motivational! I am so excited about this next year and going back to India :)

Duane never asked what I wanted for my birthday, because he wanted to surprise me. Since he has great listening skills, he knew what I wanted, even though I didn't know I wanted/needed it. It's like I hint at things, but don't realize it, so I still get to be surprised.

For example, one day, as we were talking to a friend about India, Duane asked, "do you have one of our brochures in your purse?" My response was "No, they don't fit in my purse..." Duane sighed, "I'm working on that." "Oh, you are working on that?" (hence the reason he likes to give me gifts ASAP).

Before he spent his money, I quizzed him on what would qualify as the perfect purse for me. He said, "some color, but not too much, an outside pocket for the cell phone, and one or two inside, with a zipper so things don't fall out, big enough for wallet, camera, and brochures (without folding them), which means the water bottle
would fit, rather than carrying that around too." I couldn't wait to see this perfect purse. He knows me so well!

The rest of my birthday present was a surprise - a couple headbands and a chalk bag. FYI - That's so when climbing you can dip your hands in chalk when they get sweaty, because sweaty hands make you slip and fall.

When I visited Colorado in December, one of Duane's friends gave me all of her climbing gear - shoes (that fit me!), harness, belay, rope, and a chalk bag. That's expensive stuff, which I was given for free, so it's OK that her favorite color is apparently red.

However, when climbing, I hate when my hands feel so dry from the chalk, and then even the texture of that red chalk bag feels like nails on a chalkboard. At some point I made a comment about that. Duane, with his amazing listening skills, heard, remembered, and responded - giving me a soft, blue chalk bag for my birthday.

So, of course, this evening we went to the gym, so I could use my new chalk bag :)

Family Christmas Cruise

This year for Christmas my mom’s side of the family did a cruise. There were 28 of us. For most of us it was our first cruise and for some, the flight to Miami was their first time on an airplane.

Some highlights:
Key West, Florida – We went to the southernmost point of the continental USA. There were also lots of great shops, that all look the same after awhile, but only 1 store had my hippie wedding dress.

Nassau, Bahamas – We went to Atlantis. There’s a huge aquarium that costs $80 to see, but today was discounted to $35 - or so they say... Mom, Alissa, and I tried to get into the dolphin area, but got kicked out, because we didn’t have a pass. Then we got lost in the giant hotel and accidently wandered past security into the dining room where we could see part of the aquarium. So we tried to look innocent while we took lots of pictures, and then got out of there.

Coco Cay, Bahamas  – The only day it was warm enough to go swimming. Although it was still pretty cold and cloudy. None-the-less we got nice tans (or sunburn). I went snorkeling for the first time. There are some cool fish down there…

The ship has a 30 foot climbing wall – I climbed a total of 12 times over the course of 4 days. Yes, the staff knew me by name. I raced my cousin Josh – who is 6’3” …yeah, he won…unfair height advantage… and they promised my Grandpa a free drink and a kiss if he would climb, so after much convincing, he gave it a try, and did pretty good (about 1/2 way)...

A Week in Colorado

I've been busy getting engaged and enjoying meeting a bunch of Duane's friends and enjoying Thai food, Mexican food, Pie, playing the Wii, office Christmas party, and family events with more yummy, spicy food :)

I was sad to leave Cascade, where everybody knows everybody. Jesus must have thought I would feel more at home in Colorado Springs, if we kept running into people Duane knows. So even though it's a big city, we ran into people he knew at the grocery store, and random other places, every day...

One of his friends gave me her old climbing shoes and harness, so we went to the climbing gym and had so much fun! The best part is, it did not bother my wrists at all, so we're going to keep going, and I'll start gaining strength in my wrists again.

It was a fun week!! Now I'm off to NY to spend Christmas with my family...without Duane...lame...  :(

A New Home

I must admit, when I arrived back in Idaho this spring, I was sad not to live with the DeZwaan's again, because this little guy took over "my" room.
Of the 12 weeks since I came back, I've spent half of that time on road trips, at the camp, and backpacking. The other half of the time I lived at the office. Notice I said "lived" not "live."

Last weekend I got back from Salt Lake City, exhausted and ready for a quiet, relaxing weekend at "home" (aka the office). Not sure why I thought 4th of July weekend would be quiet, when all of Boise comes up for our hour long parade and there's about 3000 people around the lake watching the fireworks at 11pm.

All of my co-workers were also in town for the festivities, meaning there were 7 girls staying at the office. Don't get me wrong, although I did enjoy spending last summer with Carrie and a bunch of guys, I love that we have more girls on staff this year, and great ones at that! I'm just not a fan of living with that many people in a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house which doubles as our office and has people coming a going all of the time.

Seeing as how I'm going to be in town for a bit, at last I decided it was time to be a responsible adult and find a place in town to live - maybe rent a room from some nice old lady, or find a cute little studio apartment. My only specifications were it had to be within 2 blocks of the office (I'm not getting a car too), and not pay more than I'm already paying to live in the office. Yesterday 3 of us girls signed a month-to-month lease on a little 2-3 bedroom house which belongs to the church I attend, and it's right around the corner from the office.

Sso here's my new room...which needs painted, I know...
there's no closets at all, anywhere in the house, but at last I have found a use for my roll of wrapping paper and a temporary solution...the kitchen
There's no point in taking a picture of anything else, until there's furniture or something picture-worthy.

The funny thing is, there is no one in town this weekend...everyone else is on a mountain somewhere, or doing outreach in Boise or Salt Lake City, or managing the Camp, or off speaking at a Church camp, or visiting family...

6 Christmases

All 6 Christmases were good...I even had a white Christmas!!! Then it melted on the 26th. I think I have seen all of my relatives who live in NY or PA...that's how I ended up having 6 Christmases...and growing up we only had 4 Christmases a year...but since I was out of the country the last couple Christmases, I had to make up for it somehow.

This was the first time in 3 years that all 3 of us sisters were together for the Christmas holiday season, so we had to make Candy Houses. We have done this every year of our lives (even in India I made a mini one with Parle-G crackers and peanut butter, but no candy)...
Mom had said when we have kids, we can bring them over to make candy houses and she'll provide the supplies. Seeing as how there are no grand-kids yet, we figured we should probably buy our own candy and clean-up after ourselves...So we used a kit, rather than gram crackers because we're kind of cheap and lazy and just doing it because it's nostalgic and fun...As kids and we'd fill the inside of the house with candy so it wouldn't fall in, but more-so as a strategy of claiming our candy and hiding it away for later, but we're much more mature now...
Alissa + I shared a Candy House and we were going to take it with us to Mom's house today, but we accidentally left it in Dad's van when we met in the middle and switched vehicles...I guess it's not a major loss since I have the bag of left-over candy :) since neither of my sisters eat dairy, it's all mine... mauhahahahaha!

Rico

A couple weeks ago 3 year old Wesley gave me a kiss and told me to put it in my pocket and take it to Rico (I think he meant Costa Rica). Anyway, I finally met my invisible friend Rico...He was attracted to my incredible baking abilities...Unfortently Rico doesn't help me clean up, or eat the junk food...so guess what I had for lunch? Caramel Corn and cookie dough...I could feel myself dying, so I drank V8 juice to counter-act the sugar poisoning...

That's pretty much all I did today...and read a physiology book... that's not normal reading material is it? It'll probably tell me that I shouldn't have invisible friends...

23rd Birthday

Due to previous crappy experiences with birthdays, I tend to approach these days with low expectations. I’m happy if it is a simple, un-complicated, non-dramatic day.

My best birthday was my 20th. It was a normal Wednesday in the life of a college student. The only special thing I planed was getting someone to fill in for me in the dish-room.

Normally I would go to the gym on Wednesday evening to play volleyball. However, my roommate had to go do some sort of event that for some reason she expected to be hard to deal with emotionally. Her Dad had died the previous summer, and although I had no idea what that had to do with this event, I reluctantly agreed to be in our room waiting for her when she got back that evening.

She returned and seemed rather down. She insisted I go with her to the lounge to microwave some food and I complied. SURPRISE!! That little stinker and my other friends had planed a birthday party for me!!
Looking back now, what made my 20th birthday special wasn’t the party, pizza, ice cream, or games. It was special because my friends loved me enough to throw a party for me and they even managed to surprise me. I had surprise party was when I was 12 or so, and I figured it out and therefore was not so surprised.

This year I approached my 23rd birthday with my typical low-expectations. Since I had just arrived in America Saturday evening (after traveling since Thursday), I expected to be tired, jet-lagged, culture-shocked, and probably sick. Due to the time-zone change, Saturday was 36 hours long, and I was awake for the last 20 hours straight.

Tiffany picked me up at the airport and we spent the night at Ali’s house. Surprisingly I slept 8 hours that night 10-4 + 6-8am. It was a soft, warm bed, with a fluffy pillow, fleece blanket and a down comforter. I had died and gone to heaven. I woke up feeling great!

The weather was warmer than I expected, I had a new skirt to wear (I bought it in Delhi with my last 100 rupees = $2) and I borrowed a matching shirt from Ali. It was a beautiful day. The sky was blue, the air fresh and clean after a spring rain, and the tall snow-capped mountains were bigger and more beautiful than I had remembered. Health-wise I even felt great…or at least better than what I now consider “normal.”

We went to Ali’s church. It had been the 1st church I visited when I arrived inIdaho for my D-school a year and a half ago. I have changed a lot since that day… but that is a different story. I enjoyed an English church service, and the fact that no one asked us to speak, share testimonies or help with the children. We were just normal visitors.

It didn’t feel much like my birthday…probably because I was confused as to how I ended up in America. Oddly enough there was no cake, gifts or cards (I’m sure there are cards waiting for me at the office). I did have cake in Vnsi when they celebrated March birthdays, and I just happened to be there…
Today was also my first birthday spent away from my family, which made me feel rather grown-up, but sad because usually on birthdays my mom would make delicious Éclair cake and my favorite meal…although at the moment I don’t know what my favorite American meal would be…

After church we went out for lunch and Ali made sure they sang for me, and I got free ice cream.
Then we did our shopping to re-stock on the necessities of life – food and toiletries. After 1 year of convincing, Ali had agreed to get her ears pierced, but only if we brought her earrings for India, so we did…you would think today was her birthday :)
The high-light of the day was going to Cold Stone for supper yummy ice cream!!
We said “good-bye” to Ali and headed up to Cascade. I drove, because Tiffany was tired (you would think she was the one with jet-lag). After dark, we arrived at my new house…I’ll tell you more about that later…

Holi - the Festival of Colors

Holi is an Indian festival to celebrate the beginning of spring. March 11th was the perfect spring morning. 90 degrees, sunny, clear blue skies, low pollution, and almost no humidity. All that was missing was watermelon and lemonade, but I had those the day before...If I didn't know better, I would say it sounds like a summer day in America...but this is India...

7:30 was earlier than we wanted to be awake, but we had to get up at this hour in order to make it safely to M's house for breakfast. We had been warned "don't go outside on this day." We knew the consequences, and we were armed and ready. The fun began when we stepped outside. "splat", a water balloon landed in an explosion of pink.Purple water shot from Josiah's water gun in retaliation. The war was on! With pink and orange dye smeared on our faces, we joined the neighborhood children playing the street. Josiah called it "the mother of all water-wars."We were "attacked" by a gang of teenager boys. In our attempt to get even, they caught Joe and smeared poop/mud on his face and shirt...ok, that's a little gross...

Shortly after that M called me to the roof to watch the fun. She said something about many men drinking and playing, and I had noticed that most people "playing" were men and children. I bitterly stood on the roof, the Indian culture had interfered with my fun...

A few minuets later, some women came and M told me to go play with them. "Play" meant let them smear colored dye on my face. Then I got to do it to them as well...Then we went to visit our various friends. First we went to S & J's house for chai. Joe attempted to clean the poop/mud off of himself.Someone turned on the hose to help him...and soaked all of us. J's little daughter, ran across the porch crying, and without hesitation, lept from the porch into her mother's arms.

From there we went to I & J's house. M gave me some dye and said to put it on J's face when she opened the door. M knocked, the door opened, and J poured a bucket of water on me. Then the fight went in-doors as the guys dragged L from his room, smearing his face with colors. Our growing gang moved down the street to U & G's.While chai was served, an all out water-war took place in their kitchen and porch. You can do this in India, because houses are cement, tile and marble, and furniture is mostly plastic lawn chairs...then we chilled on the porch and dried off in the sun...until someone started the war again...We went back to M's for a dance party in her 10x12 ft living room...then home for showers, lunch, and laundry...which all turned pink...

It was a good day...

Our Random Aliments...

The group has left me and is on their way back to America...sad but true.

We did it!! I lead a co-group in India!! We are all still alive and well, nothing bad happened, and we didn't run out of money either. For the most part, we were all quiet healthy this outreach...at least it seems like there were less sick people, than their were last year.

We did have an odd assortment of ailments, with "doctor" Andrea diagnosed for us as: parasites, geardia, and stomach/intestine cancer all resulted in the need for anti-diarrhea pills...but maybe the real problem was just the spicy food...According Wesley, "diaper rash hurtin' my poopy diaper."

A couple of the guys had what they called "chicken skin" rash...or maybe leprosy? Hopefully Sam won't get "cat scratch fever," since he was scratched by the leopard at the zoo...got a little too close to the cage...

Both my "Tuberculous" and Andrea's "Yellow Fever" turned out to be just a cold, but Wesley's "Yellow Fever" was only cured after taking a bath...

Yep, it has been fun...and now I am quite tired...

Good night...sleep tight...don't let the bed-bugs bite...If they do, I would hate to be you...
Tiffany and Andrea had quiet the infestation in their hotel room in Agra...
My bed-bugs waited till the last night to bite...itchy little red dots, which did turn into hives if I scratched them. By the way - bed-bug bites last up to a week...which means they are finally stopping to itch...

That's all for now...I've got a train to catch...
Happy Valentine's Day to me...on a train to Vnsi by myself...lame...

Happy New Year

I spent the weekend with some friends from college. Some of them I hadn't seen in 2 and half years. Wow, college was a long time ago...

Upon arrival, I discovered that my Mom's sporty little car was only front-wheel drive, so it didn't make it up the driveway.Of course I had no cell reception, and according to my directions, the lane back to the house was like 2 miles long, fortunately, my phone worked at the top of the hill, and I was able to get the car back to the house via a not-so-steep driveway, which was still quite challenging.

It was great fun to see my friends again!

I feel like I should have felt more grown-up, since it was a bunch of us 20 something singles staying at a cabin on our own (with no "real" adults), cooking, cleaning, and keeping the fire going.

However, for some reason, being with my wonderful x-roommate, brings out my silly side...which was soooo wonderfully freeing and happiness! We even played with stuffed animals... (we get extra goofy late at night)We also played "Pictionary Man"probably breaking every rule of real Pictionary, but it was more fun that way :)
On New Years day we went sledding and tried to snowboard. It was a wet snow, and I left my snowpants in Idaho...that was cold...but still lots of funWow, I used fun like a bajilion times in this post...fun, fun, fun...In case you missed it, I had a really FUN weekend...I love my friends!

Valentines at Taj Mahal

Yep...we went to the Taj Mahal on Valentines day...
Look at the Taj from a roof-top resturant...

A beautiful tourist attraction next to a trash filled river...
